The State of TV

by Jane Dards

All things dull and ugly
We wallow in today.
The foolish and the cuddly,
The tripe we can replay.

The documentaries dragging,
The dramas played too fast,
Celebrities all bragging,
And Hitler all the past.

The sordid soap-land plotlines,
The killings and the gore,
The audiences’ hotlines:
It’s such a crushing bore.

Thank God for this, well-hidden,
That leaves us wanting more:
The gem amid the midden –
The BBC’s got Four.

"The State of TV" was first published in the "Feedback" section of The Radio Times issue for 17-23 September 2011. Jane sent it in during the readers' outrage about proposed cuts to BBC4's budget.
